the past few years I have been fortunate enough to be invited to
celebrate the Iranian New Year with some Iranians living in Norwich, Norfolk. The following article was put together by an Iranian

means 'New Day'. It is the new day that starts the year,
traditionally the exact astronomical beginning of Spring. Iranians
take that as the beginning of the New Year. This exact second is
called </span></span></span></span><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><i><span style="background: #ffffff;">"Saal

No-Rooz with its' uniquely Iranian characteristics has been
celebrated for at least 3,000 years and is deeply rooted in the
rituals and traditions of the Zoroastrian This was the religion of
ancient Persia before the advent of Islam in 7th century

the Saal Tahvil, people hug and kiss each other and wish each other a
'Happy New Year'. Then they exchange presents (traditionally cash,

The first few days are spent visiting older members of the family,
relatives and friends. Children receive presents and sweets, special
meals and </span></span><span style="color: black;"><i><span style="background: #ffffff;">"Aajil"</span></i></span><span style="color: black;"><span style="background: #ffffff;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Tinnitus
– a personal perspective</span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;">I
was recently asked to do my talk on 'relaxation and
stress-management' to a local tinnitus support group. This request
has motivated me to explore what it means to have this condition. I
know that my hearing is very important to me and on the rare occasion
when my hearing had been affected by a heavy cold I'm aware of slight
deafness and sounds that are not normally there. Fortunately after a
few days I recover but this is not a case with many people. CW is one
of these people. I met CW some time ago at a local allotment scheme
where we are both members and this is what she says about living with
this condition:-</span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; orphans: 1;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; orphans: 1;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“<span style="font-size: medium;">Thanks
for asking me about tinnitus. I try not to think about it but it has
been interesting putting these thoughts down. …..</span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; orphans: 1;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; orphans: 1;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;">I’ve
lived with a sharp hissing in one ear for over 40 years, when I went
completely deaf in my right ear, and a less sharp hiss in the other
for about five years. I probably had ear problems since I was a baby
because I had a lot of earache and a doctor found I was lip-reading
at some point in my childhood. Up until I retired 10 years ago I was
working and travelling and generally being more energetic than I am
now so I probably didn’t notice the tinnitus as much as in recent
years. I certainly notice the noise when I’m talking/writing about
it, like now!! And I notice it at night when all is supposed to be
silent.</span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; orphans: 1;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; orphans: 1;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;">I
remember going to a self-help group in Sheringham about 25 years ago
but I found that talking about tinnitus made me quite depressed so I
decided not to go any more. I am an outgoing and optimistic person,
and being active and having lots of interests helped, and still
helps, distract from the noise. At home, I have the radio on, and I
like to be outside, whatever the weather, in the garden, the city or
on the allotment where there is low to medium background noise.
Obviously loud noise is to be avoided. As we get older, hearing often
deteriorates and the downside of being sociable is that hearing
speakers and people I’m with, is now very hard work. I need to see
someone’s face to hear properly and there mustn’t be background
music or clatter, as in many cafes, for instance. Lots of people do
not enunciate their words (you could say mumble!) and not only do I
struggle to hear, but voices have to be sharp enough to override the
tinnitus as well.</span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; orphans: 1;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; orphans: 1;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;">We
can get ringing in our ears as a result of various things but there
is no cure for tinnitus caused by ear damage, as far as I know. The
brain develops coping strategies but I can only say that it’s
important to get out and about, do things, keep busy and keep
positive. While I can never experience the silence of mountains in
winter, which is where I first realised I had bad tinnitus (I was
working in Geneva), I can appreciate the sounds of nature whether in
the garden or in the countryside of on the coast: wind in the trees,
birdsong, water – these things make life enjoyable and well worth
living”. <i>(CW)</i></span></span></div>

<span style="font-weight: normal;">"Happy (Chinese) New Year" to all; may year of the monkey be a good one for you all.</span></h2>
<h2>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><br />Following on from my blog about how I keep active & connected I thought I would try out the computing skills I learnt today. This is just one of the examples of what I do to try to keep my grey cells active. </span></h2>
<h2>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">At the IT class today I re-learnt how to use the 'Pixlr' photo editor programme to load a photo from a folder. Then I cropped it to the area I wanted to keep, re-sized it & finally added text. I was also shown how to rotate a photo.</span></h2>
<h2>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><br />I tried to repeat the taught steps & did the above on my own at home. I picked a photo I took whilst on holiday in Korea which I downloaded from my camera onto my laptop. Then following what I had learnt in class I was able to do the above. Hope you like it.</span></h2>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, serif; font-size: 13pt; line-height: 0.59cm;">Every
day life seems to get busier & busier for me; especially with all
my voluntary commitments. On top of that I also have a family to look
after so how do I manage to look after my Wellbeing. As a therapist I realise that in order to care for others I must first of all care for myself.</span></div>
<div class="western" style="line-height: 0.59cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<div class="western" style="line-height: 0.59cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, serif;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;">I
have just heard on the radio that recent research has shown that
people who have a wide circle of connections are happier and more
content than those who have fewer connections. </span></span>
</div>
<div class="western" style="line-height: 0.59cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<div class="western" style="line-height: 0.59cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, serif;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;">There
is so much advice and information from the Government and health
authorities to be fit, in body & mind, that it can be bewildering
to know where to start. Well, this is how I try to fit in the advice
given:-</span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="line-height: 0.59cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<ul>
<li><div class="western" style="line-height: 0.59cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, serif;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;"><b>Be
connected</b></span></span></span><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, serif;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;">–
connect with everyone around you. This can include family, friends,
colleagues and neighbours. Spend time developing these relationships
e.g. by a quick chat on the doorstep to having a long leisurely
drink with a friend. Don’t forget that some strangers are just
friends you haven’t made yet! I make a point of setting time aside
for family/friends and try to make sure that I don’t let
relationships drift. I go as far as arranging mutual times to call
my adult children who live away from home. I also try to set slots
aside in my diary to see friends or else things can easily drift. I
make it a priority to stay in touch with my family and friends. </span></span></span>
</div>
</li>
</ul>
<div class="western" style="line-height: 0.59cm; margin-bottom: 0cm; margin-left: 1.27cm;">
<br />
</div>
<ul>
<li><div class="western" style="line-height: 0.59cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, serif;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;"><b>Be
active</b></span></span></span><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, serif;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;"> –This
doesn’t have to be in a gym or cost any money. Just by taking a
walk to the local shops/park can help your mental wellbeing without
much effort. It is best to find an activity that you thoroughly
enjoy and you can easily fit into your life. I try to walk whenever
I can as the fresh air often helps me to clear my mind. A longish
walks also makes sure that I am tired enough to have a good night’s
sleep. Don’t let the wet & windy weather in the UK at the
moment put you off as we’re ‘waterproof’ & there’s no
such thing as bad weather - just bad clothing! </span></span></span><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, serif;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;">So
warm up & enjoy the day; below is me enjoying bird watching on a chilly day on the Norfolk coast.</span></span></span></div>

learning any new skills can give you a sense of achievement. It can
also build confidence and maybe a new set of friends or at least you
will be in company of people who have similar interests. I joined a
computer class run by the local Adult Education Service last year
and more recently I have also joined a new photography group. Now I
must get myself a SLR camera! These groups have opened up new
learning areas for me and some have definitely challenged me! Any
activity that involves mental activity is also good at keeping
dementia at bay so keep those grey cells active.</span></span></span></div>

The smallest random acts of kindness such as a smile, or taking note
of someone’s outfit, a ‘thank you’ or a kind word can be so
beneficial to your wellbeing. You may also like to think about
volunteering with an organisation that you identify with. This will
also help your mental wellbeing and help you build new friends and
connections. I find my voluntary work with the Red Cross and other
charitable organisations very rewarding and fulfilling.</span></span></span></div>

‘Mindful’</b></span></span></span><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, serif;"><span style="font-size: 13pt;"> –
this is not mumbo jumbo or hippy dippy! It just means being more
aware and appreciative of the present moment. These moments of calm
away from your routine can help you to view any challenges more
positively. I’m a ‘graduate’ of Mindfulness and find it a
useful exercise to do before I see a client or have difficulties
going to sleep – it works every time for me! Mindfulness also
means being kind and compassionate to yourself and those around you.
Many health authorities in the UK offer this training free so there
is no excuse!</span></span></span></div>

Vatki Foot Massage™ (KVFM). Kansa what? I hear you say. KVFM
combined with '<i>marma
therapy' </i>-
Indian acupressure - is one of the most relaxing forms of massage
and the most established. Now it is coming to <a href="http://www.bibiwellbeing.co.uk/">Norwich</a>!</span></span></span></div>

<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15pt;">Since
qualifying in KVFM I have had nothing but praise for it. I have had
lovely comments such as 'blissful', 'so relaxing', 'like walking on
air'. This was the most recent one: 'it has left my muscles feeling
soft & calm'. I received my qualification from a tutor who
trained with the 'London Centre of Indian Champissage'. I was also
lucky enough to have the treatment & found it be utterly
relaxing.</span></span></span></div>

<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15pt;">So
what is KVFM? This 'ayurvedic' form of foot massage originates from
India and has a long well established history of use there. Ayurveda
is the traditional medicine system of India and is the world’s
oldest healing system, dating back approximately 5,000 years. By the
way, <i>'ayurveda'</i>
is thought by many to be the forerunner of modern medicine: "ayur"
means life and "veda" means knowledge. </span></span></span>

<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15pt;">Central
to the KVFM treatment is a small bowl made up of three metals -

<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">As
an adult I find the subject of loss and bereavement difficult to
discuss with others or on-line & even more so to put it down in
words. It is one of those very personal subjects and it is hard to
know how to approach it when someone has lost a person close to them.
How do you acknowledge their bereavement? A card? A phone call? In
person? On-line? Do you talk about the dead person; and for how long
do you continue to mention them? How long should one stay in this
'grief' period? These and many other questions have cropped up
whenever there has been a bereavement in my own circle. I am aware
that people's responses will be as individual as they are.</span></span></span></div>

<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">If
I as an adult have problems discussing bereavement then imagine what
it must be like for a young child to loss a sibling, parent/s or
friend. At such difficult times 'Nelson's Journey' have come to the
rescue to help some children cope with their grief & thankfully
has helped many young children come to terms with their loss.</span></span></span></div>

birthday, who have experienced the death of a significant person in
their life e.g. parent, sibling, best friend etc. Our vision is to
give every bereaved child in Norfolk the support they need to move
forward positively with their lives, never having to cope with their
loss alone. We know offering the right help at the right time gives
them the best chance of avoiding long-term mental and emotional
health issues, which can lead to educational problems, drug and
alcohol abuse and law-breaking. We understand too that coming to
terms with their loss often means dealing with anger, bottled-up
feelings and confusion as well as grief, particularly when their love
one’s death was sudden, unexpected or the result of suicide. Our
1:1 sessions, therapeutic weekends, activity days and NJ Clubs offer
support tailored to each child’s needs and circumstances, and our
guidance gives parents and carers the tools they need to support
them. Nelson’s Journey endeavours to ‘Bring back smiles to
bereaved children’. During 2014 we received 598 referrals, a rise
of 18% on the previous year.”</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;">As
I write this the weather outside is sunny and bright – at least
it is in Norwich, Norfolk! It is so tempting to get out there to
enjoy the sun. However, it is always good idea to try and be
careful with the amount of exposure to the sun; especially during a
heatwave.</span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The
definition of a heatwave is when the temperature exceeds 30°C during
the day and 15°C at night. These temperatures could have significant
effects on people’s health regardless of their age and present
health condition. If these temperatures are reached on at least two
consecutive days and the intervening night then it is advisable to be
very sensible. </span></span></span>
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Taking
the following precaution during a heatwave may be helpful:- </span></span></span>
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<ol>
<li><div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: black;"> </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Drink
plenty of water, 2l is the recommended daily intake. Staying
hydrated, especially during a heatwave, is crucial to your
wellbeing. </span></span>
</div>
</li>
</ol>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrC5Ft1kFbEOl4dax3aCZRMYVKSO7uW7I0je8Lcp-C_ZQDXz6jYqyAakLcacsueLgoOv0i5McbtCJWeAx1zin5HCXcE9vPb2QlroEsxsHm6SKvtlY2SIg9qEL2EiTxSltiIjQSaVo8xiw/s1600/2015-08-01+09.24.50.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrC5Ft1kFbEOl4dax3aCZRMYVKSO7uW7I0je8Lcp-C_ZQDXz6jYqyAakLcacsueLgoOv0i5McbtCJWeAx1zin5HCXcE9vPb2QlroEsxsHm6SKvtlY2SIg9qEL2EiTxSltiIjQSaVo8xiw/s320/2015-08-01+09.24.50.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<ol start="2">
<li><div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Now
may be the time to sort your wardrobe out and find your cool
clothing. It is possible to be smart and cool at the same time by
planning your wardrobe according to the temperature outside. So
forget heavy wool, jersey or tight clothing such as the denim 'slim
fit' trousers/leggings which seem be the fashion at the moment.
Instead go for light and loose fitting clothing. If you are planning
to buy new clothes this summer then look out for 'smart' clothes
that are manufactured to keep you cool. I have a t-shirt made with
this material & it is very comfortable to wear when I am working
as a <a href="http://www.bibiwellbeing.co.uk/">therapist.</a></span></span></span></div>
</li>
</ol>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<ol start="3">
<li><div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Plan
ahead and pace yourself. It is always best to see what the <a href="http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/">weather forecast </a>will be if you have to be out & about during the
heatwave. The weather forecasts are usually accurate these days. If
you suffer from any pollen related allergies then paying attention
to the pollen count would be beneficial to you. </span></span></span></div>
</li>
</ol>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<ol start="4">
<li><div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Get
fresh air into your house/workplace. This may not always be easy but
do what you can to create a through draft through open doors and
windows where secure and safe to do so. Also, using a fan to lower
the temperature would be helpful. You may like to think about
switching off hot lights or electrical equipment that generate extra
heat – this will also save you money!</span></span></span></div>
</li>
</ol>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<ol start="5">
<li><div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Avoid
physical exertion. Plan your day and delay anything that requires
exertion to a cooler day or an early morning. If possible get
someone to help you with heavy physical tasks. </span></span></span>
</div>
</li>
</ol>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<ol start="6">

<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Travelling
- do you have to make that journey? If it is unavoidable then try
to minimise going out in the heat of the day, normally between 11am
- 3pm. Plan for cooler times of the day or delay your travel
altogether. Also, always make sure that you have plenty of water to
drink with you especially if you are caught in traffic or delayed on
the railway. I always carry water in an insulated carrier &
always have a frozen wrap around my water bottle. A little snack
such as a banana is also a good idea.</span></span></span></div>

<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;">The

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This is one of the simplest, effective & cheapest way to cool down during the heatwave which we are having in the UK at the moment. Today the temperature where I live was in the 20s. So turn of the air conditioning/fans and just get yourself a water bottle. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Place the bottle in the freezer for a few minutes and as the picture shows roll it under your bare feet. Of course, you can also do this with your socks/tights on. This will cool you down and as an added bonus will also massage your feet so helping to relax the rest of your body. What could be better than that. You'll feel refreshed & it only takes a few minutes.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

What to do about it.<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 16pt;"><b>Pain
in the butt? What to do about it.</b></span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The
statistics for back pain are staggering. Back
pain is very common and according to a survey published recently
almost half the adult population of the UK report low back pain
lasting for at least 24 hours at some time in the year. It is
estimated that fou<span id="goog_1269840295"></span><span id="goog_1269840296"></span><a href="https://www.blogger.com/"></a>r out of every five adults will experience back
pain at some stage in their life. The cost to the local
economy and to one's health is enormous. Recently nearly
5 million working days were lost as a result of back pain. This means that
on any one day 1% of the working population are on sickness leave due
to a back problem. Back pain is the number 2 reason for long-term
sickness in much of the UK. </span></span></span>
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">If
you had persistent back pain it used to be suggested that bed rest
was the only solution and people used to be confined to their beds
for months on end. As medical knowledge has improved, this is no
longer the case. It is just as well that this advice is no longer
followed as it leads to muscle wastage and can affect one's mental
wellbeing. Recent researches in numerous countries have shown that
the best way to manage back pain is through activity which help to
strengthen the core muscles. These muscles are crucial in supporting
our frames and any strengthening of muscles will also help to support
the areas affected. Activities needed to strengthen muscles are
varied and can include everything from gentle walking to vigorous
swimming. Also, gentle exercise routines Such as Pilates or Yoga are
worth investigating.</span></span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">As
a back pain sufferer I know just how pain can affect one's whole
wellbeing. Life can become a struggle and the pain seems to be
ever-present and dominating one's life. I remember when I first had
my first attack of bad sciatica and things were desperate for me.
Pain definitely has a way of saying “don't ignore me”! I tried
out the usual physio and walking. It wasn't until I had some sessions
of acupuncture that things began to improve. I also has regular
massage sessions with a therapist who went on to become my massage
tutor! I noticed the massage sessions helped me to unwind and forget
my pain for duration of the treatment. The good news was that these
'feel-good effects' carried on for some time afterwards and I was
able to 'bank' them. I decided to combine the treatments with gentle
walking by joining a health group ran by the local Council and also
a local walking group run by the local church. I made a point of noticing everything around me and tried to be calm.</span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE2l0qXh5WklrQThrRu9-ewHwOmQMx5iwpbAfOvFBccnfyN6LUIenKEdjgGrUFwSVUBVyr5KjvLQiK9s725DQt9LeqRaEiGAsZcLcMcwYGYI-dpOmRUn9FG-uGGldcDqBN0KDepzOOLKw/s1600/DSC_3113.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE2l0qXh5WklrQThrRu9-ewHwOmQMx5iwpbAfOvFBccnfyN6LUIenKEdjgGrUFwSVUBVyr5KjvLQiK9s725DQt9LeqRaEiGAsZcLcMcwYGYI-dpOmRUn9FG-uGGldcDqBN0KDepzOOLKw/s1600/DSC_3113.jpeg" height="213" width="320" /></a></span></span></span></div>
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"> I also joined a
swimming group as I knew that I wouldn't turn up to swim on my own!
These combined activities helped me to feel better about myself
physically.</span></span></span><br />
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">In
addition to my own self-help activities I also had traction, heat
treatments and prescribed exercises from the physiotherapist. I'm
pleased to say that I still carry on with some of these regimes to
maintain my wellbeing and strengthen my core muscles. I think that
once you have had back pain then its best to keep on top of it by
looking after it and pampering it. Pain isn't fun!</span></span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">As
well as physically looking after myself I also made sure that my
mental wellbeing was taken care of. I did this by surrounding myself
with supportive friends and family and making sure that I had social
activities planned most days. This could be anything from meeting up
for a natter and coffee (not forgetting the cake!) to going for a
special outing to the beach or an exhibition. I found that having
company helped me and having planned distractions outside the house
greatly helped me too. These activities do not have to involve any
cost – just forward planning!</span></span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">I
also found that “rewarding” myself & “self-talk” tactics
were very useful. By rewards I mean little treats like: “I'll have
a drink/biscuit after I've done this set of exercise”. Or saying to
myself: “I will feel better and I will get better”. When I said
that to myself I made sure that I put the emphasis on <i><b>“will”.</b></i>
Thinking in the positive was cathartic and I am sure it helped
towards my recovery.</span></span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">However,
it wasn't all plain sailing for me. There were days when the pain was
so bad that I felt like just crawling under the duvet and staying
there. Fortunately for me lying down was one of the worst positions
for me.</span></span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Don't
give up hope if you are in constant pain. Make sure that you are
getting all the help that the National Health can provide for you and
also make sure that your condition has been thoroughly investigated.
Don't leave any stones unturned. I know this is easier said than
done. When you are in pain it can take your self-confidence away and
your ability to concentrate and communicate effectively may well be
gone. If this does happen to you then make sure that
you've got a family member/friend to support you. If you don't want
to share this with family/friends then there are also many charities
that may be able to support and act as your advocate. <a href="http://www.mind.org.uk/">MIND</a> is one of
the most active charities in supporting people's mental wellbeing.
You may also find that joining a support / interest group may well
help you.</span></span></span></div>

a <a href="http://www.bibiwellbeing.co.uk/">massage</a> therapist I often get clients with back pain and I know

<div align="JUSTIFY" class="western" style="line-height: 0.76cm; margin-bottom: 0.85cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="_GoBack"></a><span style="color: black;"><i>"Acupuncture
is a part of traditional Chinese medicine in which small, hair sized
needles is inserted into the body at specific locations in order to
alter the flow of energy. These channels which, according to Chinese
medicine, run through the body keep everything in line and balanced.
If one of these should happen to get out of balance, however, it
could cause a problem in the entire body and depending on where the
imbalance occurred, it could affect a specific area of the body. This
is really the essence of yin and yang, the two forces which regulate
almost everything within the human body. I am always interested in
TCM to treat people using the body power and the soul by stimulating
QI or SHI through the meridians channels to release and remove the
blockage point using the acupuncture or acupressure on specific the
acu-points to help healing and treat the cause of the disease. The
strong back ground in biomedical and biological sciences where I have
been practice in pathology to diagnose diseases using the western
medicine methodology helped me to full understand of the human
anatomy and physiology and increased my ambition to treat the human
body and soul with the holistic therapy methods instead of the
western chemical medicine which it always had a side effects. I am
always interested in treating the cause of disease not just the
symptoms, passionately enjoying working with people at profound level
to encourage potential in addition to treating the illness. As I
always believe that our bodies have an amazing ability to heal
themselves but just need a helping hand". </i> </span></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 0.76cm;">Dr.

She has been very supportive of my business from the beginning. She kindly agreed to be my first guest blogger. As you can see she had an interesting career so far:-</span></h2>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">"I am a Complementary
Therapist, qualified in Aromatherapy, Holistic and Indian Head
Massage. A member of and insured with the FHT – The Federation of
Holistic Therapists. Based in West Wiltshire with my husband and my
daughter, I am passionate about organic food, farming and pretty much
everything else that is organic and truly natural!</span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Previously a primary
teacher, I decided that it was time to take a different direction
after spending the early years of my daughter’s life as a full time
mum. So looking for something that fitted around her, as teaching
was no longer an option, in October 2011 I commenced my training as
an Aromatherapist. I then became an independent consultant with NYR
Organic in February 2012 as I had used the products for years and
couldn’t resist the idea of discount. I quickly realised how well
these two things fitted together and have built quite a large
business with NYRO – which is now supporting the growth of my
therapy business as customers become clients and vice versa!</span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In July 2013, desperate
to start working as a therapist, I gained a diploma in Indian Head
Massage and started working at Warminster Osteopathic Clinic. In
August 2014 I received a distinction in Aromatherapy & Holistic
Massage through the Bristol School for Holistic Therapies. I am very
excited about setting up my home clinic, the launch of which is
imminent as all I have to do I make a blind for the window! Also
looking forward to adding some more therapies and further developing
my skills with CPD over the coming months. I am planning to add
aromatherapy massage in pregnancy and take some advanced aromatherapy
training for pregnancy , more therapeutic massage techniques such as
releasing the back, hip and neck, holistic facials and Thai foot
massage. In order to become the best Aromatherapist I can possibly
be, I’ve just booked a two day advanced certificate seminar in
June “Essential Oil Chemistry & Pharmacology", delivered by
Robert Tisserand at Gabriel Mojay’s Institute in Regent’s Park,
London and I am very excited about that indeed! I absolutely love
essential oils and very interested in observing how these wonderful
chemicals can aid in all kinds of health conditions and are even
being researched for their support in antibiotic resistance.

<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I am now a Team leader
with Neal’s Yard Remedies Organic, mentoring and coaching a
fabulous team of like-minded people who are passionate about holistic
health and well-being, promoting the use of ethical, non-toxic, truly
natural, soil association certified organic skincare, supplements,
natural remedies & high quality essential oils. I love the ethos
and ethical nature of the way in which Neal’s Yard Remedies
conducts their business and wish other companies would follow suit as
the world would be in a much better state if that were the case.</span></div>

<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="_GoBack"></a>I
am passionate about complementary therapies and natural remedies and
have found throughout my life there have been many occasions where I
have found relief from conditions which have been resolved with a
holistic approach to wellness. Many of us live highly stressful
lives and it is my aim to support others who would like to explore
the complementary approach to health and wellbeing. The effects of
long term stress can cause many other mental and physical health
problems and so many of us are afflicted with the ill effects of
stress – unable to relax, difficulty sleeping, anxiety, high blood
pressure, digestive problems, panic attacks, reduction of immunity
and all number of other conditions. Aromatherapy massage has helped
me to relax and I have found so many things which I have been able to
treat without turning to medicines. Athletes foot for example has
plagued me for years and now I have found a blend of oils which works
within hours to relieve the itching and soreness. Recently I
discovered that my chickens had feather lice and found that I could
use essential oils for this too! Now the coop smells of lavender and
thyme most days instead of the more obvious smell associated with
chickens!" <a href="https://sueadlamtherapies.wordpress.com/blog-2/">https://sueadlamtherapies.wordpress.com/blog-2/</a>.

To sleep or not to sleep, that is the question.</span></h2>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsGYRWBja9UZwm29WeIbiG9V9IB1MVfmRXqRih1GNy9QfI-Bg32HsStpVFOjr0MYbu5xqjPuEhNiV2qHOxFkYpw_KNx4kYt5mpLh2Xod-Fo_eTpCao1vYZ9ugIsdhhUyemyN43wGfuKzU/s1600/sleep1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsGYRWBja9UZwm29WeIbiG9V9IB1MVfmRXqRih1GNy9QfI-Bg32HsStpVFOjr0MYbu5xqjPuEhNiV2qHOxFkYpw_KNx4kYt5mpLh2Xod-Fo_eTpCao1vYZ9ugIsdhhUyemyN43wGfuKzU/s1600/sleep1.jpg" height="146" width="320" /></a></div>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">Do you suffer from this? Are you tossing & turning in bed all hours of the night? Does it take you ages to drop off? Do you wake-up early hours? Over the years I've had some of these problems. They were acute when I was busy at home with a young family & trying to juggle a job & all my other commitments. I found out over the years that the key to feeling refreshed and relaxed is to have a regular pattern of sleep, rather than worry about the number of hours of sleep you get. Forget the old urban myth that everyone needs 8 hours of sleep! Everyone is different & the hours that you need may well be different from the hours that someone else needs. If you go to bed before you're really tired, and then sleep badly, you'll tend to stay in bed later in the morning, which will affect the next night's sleep, and so on. The 'knock-on' effects can be devastating & will affect your lifestyle & health. The following steps can help you establish a good sleep pattern & routine:-</span></h3>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
</h3>
<h2>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Establishing a routine</span></h2>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">ONLY Go to bed only when you feel tired enough to sleep. If you always take a long time to get to sleep, delay going to bed until the time when you normally fall asleep, and get up at your usual time. This should mean you spend less time in bed, but more of it asleep, and your sleep pattern should improve but it may be gradual so don't get anxious if you don't get immediate results.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">Set the alarm at the same time each morning. Don't sleep in late to make-up for a bad night. This will only make it harder to sleep the following night. You may need to follow this programme for several weeks, to establish a regular pattern. Also, wake up as soon as you hear the alarm and don't be tempted to stay asleep; however lightly. </span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">Don't watch television or use your computer in bed. These are what the brain considers waking activities. Restrict them strictly to your waking hours. Be firm with yourself and don't be tempted to just check that last minute email/Facebook update. Your 'status updates' can wait; your family & friends can wait for those crucial pictures/comments from you until the morning. Be less nosey! Make a list if you have to and do it the next day. You may like to keep a notepad by the bed. I found this particularly helpful when I was teaching or doing an event or organising an article such as this one! If anything cropped up before I fell asleep then I just wrote it down for 'tomorrow' and not 'today'. I also told myself that I was in bed & couldn't do anything about it there & then. It just had to wait... Be firm with yourself & soon this habit can be a lifesaver.</span></li>
</ul>
<div>

<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">If you don't fall asleep within 20 minutes, get up and go to relax & unwind in another room. If you don't have any other rooms to do this you then the corridor on a comfortable chair will do. Make this space as far away from the bed/bedroom as possible. Do something soothing, such as reading an amusing story, listening to music, self-massage or relaxation stretches until you're tired enough to go back to bed. Repeat this process, if you are awake for long periods.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">Avoid taking a nap during the day. But if you are really overtired, taking a short nap after lunch can be beneficial; sometimes sleep promotes sleep. Try to make the naps short ones; 30 minutes maximum. Set the alarm before your nap & wake up when the alarm goes off & don't stay in bed for another 10 minutes.</span></li>

Many clients have reported that they have slept well after such treatments. Rosemary Barber, from Broadland Bowen, is an experienced Bowen practitioner. first discovered the power of ginger when I was teaching & I
found myself constantly battling sore throats. I knew that ginger
could help to fight colds/coughs as its a warming spice. As an added
bonus it also helps to fight muscle tension. I used to make a
infusion to drink which helped to lubricate & ward off infections
from students sneezing all over me! I always tried to find the
freshest ginger possible (preferably organic) & then used a few
strips in a drink. To make the drink: firstly, thinly slice or grate
the ginger into a mug/flask & then add boiling water. Then leave
it to infuse for 5 – 10 minutes. You can keep on topping up the
drink with more hot water. You can also add honey to sweeten it.
Honey is another of nature's wonder drugs but more of that another
time. Enjoy! </span></span>

New Year to all. I hope that 2015 will be a good one for you. During
2014 I talked to various groups in Norfolk & often asked them for
relaxation tips. Here are just 10 of them:-</span></div>

slowly & deeply with your close eyes gently closed. Concentrating on your breathing was the most popular tip.</span></span></div>

<span style="color: #555555;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">As
I write this I have just heard on the radio this is the best time of the year to
get your garden ready for Spring planting. The ground has warmed up from the Summer sun andit is still not too cold to be out in the open. So, time to
plan your gardening activities and start thinking about all those
lovely fruit, flowers and vegetables you will have in Spring. Whilst gardening is a
lovely thing to do as it great way to keep fit and calm; it can also
result in injuries, especially back problems. </span></span></span>
</div>
<div class="western" style="border: none; padding: 0cm;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="line-height: 18.1417331695557px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="western" style="border: none; line-height: 0.48cm; padding: 0cm; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #555555;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Just
a few precautions will help to keep these problems at bay. In
particular people with existing back pain should take extra care when
gardening. So, before charging full steam ahead with digging, lifting, weeding
and planting just take a few moments to consider how your muscles and
joints might respond.</span></span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0.32cm; margin-top: 0.32cm; padding: 0cm; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #555555;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">1.
First things first: begin your gardening project by wearing appropriate
clothing. Ideally think about layering your clothing so that you can
remove the layers as you warm up. Wear warm and loose fitting
clothing that covers your lower back and sensible footwear like
supportive boots and thick socks - and don't forget your gardening gloves! If you've
have back problems in the past these a supportive back belt may
help.</span></span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0.32cm; margin-top: 0.32cm; padding: 0cm; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #555555;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">2.
Secondly, warm-up by taking a quick walk around the garden which will stimulate your circulation. Then limber up by doing some simple
stretches and warm up exercises. Now, when I say stretch I do not mean
sharply bend forwards to the floor or abruptly lean backwards; both
of these movements can easily result in an injury. The best way is to start slowly by
rolling your shoulders forward 10 times and back 10 times as illustrated below. Then
gently make swimming like movements using your shoulders, arms and
hands. Do try to get a full range of movement with your shoulders.
Notice any areas that do not move smoothly and concentrate on
improving it as you go through the movement.</span></span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0.32cm; margin-top: 0.32cm; padding: 0cm; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #555555;"><img align="BOTTOM" alt="garden stretch 2" border="0" height="223" name="graphics3" src="http://www.backexperts.co.uk/media/522697/garden%20stretch%202.jpg" width="223" /></span></div>
<ol start="4">
<div class="western" style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0.32cm; margin-top: 0.32cm; padding: 0cm; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #555555;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">3.
Stretch your legs by gently going up onto your tip-toes, hold and then down
again. You may like to hold on to a spade/fork handle for balance.</span></span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0.32cm; margin-top: 0.32cm; padding: 0cm; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="western" style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0.32cm; margin-top: 0.32cm; padding: 0cm; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;">4. Take
regular breaks and continue to do stretching exercises whilst
admiring nature that is all around you.</span></div>
</ol>
<div class="western" style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0.32cm; margin-left: -0.03cm; margin-top: 0.32cm; padding: 0cm;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: #555555; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #555555;">5.
It would also help if you took s</span><span style="color: #333333;">mall
spadefuls or used a small spade. There's no race to get it over and done with! Enjoy the process and you will feel much better for it.</span></div>
</span><br />
<div class="western" style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0.32cm; margin-top: 0.32cm; padding: 0cm; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="color: #555555;">To
summarise it is really important to </span><span style="color: #555555;">start
slowly & try to relax whilst digging. At all cost avoid
over-exertion as this will not help back problems; be </span><span style="color: #333333;">careful
not to over-reach and try to cut as close to your body as possible.</span><span style="color: #555555;">
</span></span></span>
</div>
<div class="western" style="border: none; margin-bottom: 0.32cm; margin-top: 0.32cm; padding: 0cm; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Now
you are good to go – enjoy your gardening!</span></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 16pt;">Caring
Care Homes: What to look for</span></span></h3>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;">Looking after our wellbeing is important at all stages of our lives & it doesn't stop when one goes into a care home/sheltered accommodation. In fact it becomes even more important to look after one's wellbeing so that depression & social isolation are kept at bay.</span></h3>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;">If
you are looking for a Care Home or Sheltered Accommodation for yourself or most likely for an
elderly loved family member or friend, then there can be bewildering
advice out there as to what to look for in order to get the best place.</span></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></div>

have had experience of working in numerous care homes throughout Norfolk, England, during my long teaching career. I have taught the carers & management teams. Through the </span></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;">'EXTEND' organisation </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;">I also did mobility classes with residents. Towards the end of my commitments with these projects I became quite able to see</span><span style="color: red; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;"> </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;">by just stepping
inside the building as to whether it was well managed & a “happy”
home.</span></h3>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;"> </span></h3>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixeeZ4aWs2BFUeE1HCzFFGuY5IRv4lfmYBzbN3mYYt4fXipbGftPhndOVQ8JefXr8Y-JX211QfjRvbjgzBQgeq7-rEjV9OCGsP-wna90ZwoD9YaQzbEOrGIOrD1lJg1cqHQQ-hOObj70k/s1600/Aging.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixeeZ4aWs2BFUeE1HCzFFGuY5IRv4lfmYBzbN3mYYt4fXipbGftPhndOVQ8JefXr8Y-JX211QfjRvbjgzBQgeq7-rEjV9OCGsP-wna90ZwoD9YaQzbEOrGIOrD1lJg1cqHQQ-hOObj70k/s1600/Aging.jpg" /></a><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;">Well, what does one look for when searching out a care home? It may be worth remembering that this search may be carried out during an emotional/upsetting time for all concerned. The signs of a well cared-for establishments usually indicates
that they are paying attention to details & so will pay attention
to their residents. Well, with such a bewildering care home
facilities & specialism what does one look for? You can, of course, check out the care homes' status/reports on the Care Quality Commission's (<a href="http://www.cqc.org.uk/">CQC</a>) website. </span></span></h3>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></h3>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;">Well cared-for establishments which pay attention to details are most likely to be those which pay attention to their residents, so it is also worth keeping an eye open for the following:-</span></span></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i>*</i></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;">If
there is a strong smell of urine (or worse!) then avoid. It shows
that the staff are under pressure & not able to deal with this
very necessary care with any degree of satisfaction.</span></h3>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-weight: normal;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><i><span style="font-size: large;">*</span></i><span style="font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;">Are the
residents actively encouraged to take part in activities offered - whether it be crafts to maintain dexterity, social events to
maintain contacts or talks to challenge the grey matter?</span></span></h3>

<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">

</h3>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><i><br /></i></span></h3>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i>*</i></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;">Do
the care homes invite the community into the homes? For example, one of my
regular </span><a href="http://www.bibiwellbeing.co.uk/" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large; font-weight: normal;">massage</a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;"> clients lives in a home run by a housing association &
they have a close link with a nearby local school. Here the children
visit the home regularly & do story books/crafts with the residents.
My client has proudly shown me these & says she very much enjoys
these sessions. The children also sing for the residents. More
importantly, each resident (who wants this) is 'assigned' to an individual named child. Does the care home have an annual fête or
coffee mornings to raise money for extras such as outings for the
residents? Is there a committee to organise these 'extras'? Are the residents involved in having a say in how the money raised should be spent on?</span></h3>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-weight: normal;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><i><span style="font-size: large;">*</span></i><span style="font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;">Are
the residents encouraged to sit outside? Is there appropriate &
comfortable seating with some shade provided? Most people feel good
when the sun is shining & Vitamin D, acquired by exposure to the
sun, is crucial for our wellbeing. Are the seasons brought indoors
in some way? Are there, for example, cut flowers in vases or living plants. These don't have to cost much and can be provided using planters, window boxes or grow bags. Even cardboard egg
boxes can be used. Simple things such as a very small pot of herbs
on the dining table can enhance the senses & also be a
conversation point. Vases filled with autumn colours don't cost anything except the time/thought.</span></span></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></span></div>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<i style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">*</span></i><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;">Are
there large pictures reflecting the seasons & the outside world
or there just poor copies of masterpieces such as Constable's 'Haywain'?</span></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></div>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><i><span style="font-size: large;">*</span></i><span style="font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;">Do
the staff interact with the residents in a meaningful way or are
they just acting robotically & fulfilling their job description? How do the staff address the clients? Are they using their first names with the resident's permission or are they using inappropriate patronising names? Do you get the feeling that the carers are seeing the residents as just another 'service user' (horrible term!) & just carrying out tasks according to the residents' perceived/assessed "support need".</span></span></h3>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-weight: normal;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i>*</i></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;">Are
visitors encouraged to stay for drinks/meals? Are there any visitors' facilities such as a corner to make drinks? Are there options at
meal times with special diets (such as low-fat) catered for without a
fuss? Do the staff remember who has a special diet? Is there some
way of identifying those needing special diets? Do residents get to
pre-select their meals or is everyone served the same thing? Are
residents given help with feeding? Are there enough staff to provide
help with feeding? Does the home take part in a 'feeding
companionship' programme where the trained volunteers help to feed
anyone needing help?</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-weight: normal;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></h3>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><i><span style="font-size: large;">*</span></i><span style="font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;">Does
the home arrange outings? It could be just to the supermarket or
free museums visits or just somewhere nice to enjoy the countryside
– none of these cost much! A visit could become the highlight of many of
the residents' week/month.</span></span></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></span></div>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><i><span style="font-size: large;">*</span></i><span style="font-size: medium; font-weight: normal;">Does
the care home have a 'memory box/table' that display items from the
past to promote memory & conversations. These can be easily
acquired very cheaply from charity shops & could include old
magazines, kitchen memorabilia, old pictures. These should be
regularly changed to encourage & stimulate conversations & interest. Many library services also have memory boxes on loan.Does the mobile library service visit? Are there any interesting books/magazines for the residents to read? Are these in good condition or are they dated & tatty?</span></span></h3>
<div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><i><span style="font-size: large;">*</span></i></b><span style="font-size: medium;">Are the bedrooms & other rooms in good decorative order? Are personal items such as family photos, 'treasures' or small pieces of personal furniture allowed? All these things will help the residents to maintain a contact with their past.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><i><span style="font-size: large;">*</span></i></b><span style="font-size: medium;">Is the home in contact with charities for befriending services? How is social isolation avoided? </span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><i><span style="font-size: large;">*</span></i></b><span style="font-size: medium;">How are complaints handled by the manager? Is there a formal procedure? Is there a suggestion box/comment book?</span></span></div>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;">Whatever
you choose make sure that you regularly check suitability as your friend's, family member's or your care needs will change over time.</span></span></h3>
<h3 style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;">Good luck in your search.</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></h3>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-weight: normal;">Recently I had the honour & privilege of looking after a 2 year old. Her name's Molly. During our time together I learnt a lot about Mindfulness from her. The world of a 2 year old comprises of moments and how to take part and enjoy those moments occupies them totally as the picture below shows!</span></h3>

<h3>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-weight: normal;">Young Molly's actions embrace everything that I appreciate & understand as 'Mindfulness' . In its essence it includes taking note of what's around you, enjoying the simple things, standing & staring for the sake of it and appreciating the simple things in life. You don't need money for Mindfulness just the willingness to take the time out & note things.</span></h3>

<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Also, <a href="http://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/tips-for-everyday-living/mindfulness/">Mindfulness</a> for me means enjoying the moment to its full & taking joy in the present rather than letting the past invade our thoughts & also not thinking too far ahead! “<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Stressed?
Me, never!!” How often have I heard those words from ex-colleagues,
family & friends who are clearly stressed as shown by their very
physical presentation. Symptoms can include frown marks, hunched
shoulders or tense body posture. So, what actually is stress? Stress
is looked upon as something more than a person can normally cope
with; this could be in the form of emotional, physical or
psychological demands. These extra pressures are known as
'stressors'. What may be a stressor for one person may not be for
another. For example, I'd find moving house (or the very thought)
very stressful whilst I have a friend to whom it is exciting &
new & very much to be looked forward to. So, what happens when
our bodies are under stress? Most stressed bodies will experience
high blood pressure, great muscle tension, unsteady & fast heart
beat, quick & inefficient breathing & a busy & easily
distracted mind.</span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; margin-top: 0.05cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; margin-top: 0.05cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The
good news is that it is easy to achieve a relaxed body in order to
self-manage your stress level. A relaxed body will help you to cope
so much better with the demands made by everyday living. One of the
ways is a technique called <i>'palming', </i>shown below<i>.</i> This technique includes
taking <span style="color: black;">a few minutes out every day to totally
relax the eyes which will help to calm the rest of your body and
mind. Firstly, shake your hands as if you are air drying them. Then warm up
your hands by rubbing them vigorously until they feel nice &
warm. The next step is to cup them gently and place them firmly over
your eyes for a few minutes. Try to steady your breathing and
concentrate on that. Finally, slowly take your hands away and gently
open your eyes. You should feel refreshed. You may find that taking a
few minutes out of your daily routine to relax is vital to you
functioning at your optimum.</span></span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; margin-top: 0.05cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="color: black;"><br /></span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6QGF9BGzwHSnTQNtcRWO-OepVyT1PtL_jFtLopWApHrDwkhFVmWsfpOKm_nbDK_JnburH9bViVizbVqDnaLxhSqP3wF9nUSfKW8ZXFa5Zhw2MtlqKLemxMOgSJkzFvQZER2HU393LM2A/s1600/SAM_8244.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6QGF9BGzwHSnTQNtcRWO-OepVyT1PtL_jFtLopWApHrDwkhFVmWsfpOKm_nbDK_JnburH9bViVizbVqDnaLxhSqP3wF9nUSfKW8ZXFa5Zhw2MtlqKLemxMOgSJkzFvQZER2HU393LM2A/s1600/SAM_8244.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; margin-top: 0.05cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="color: black;"><br /></span></span></span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; margin-top: 0.05cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0.05cm; margin-top: 0.05cm;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The
other effective technique is to deliberately concentrate on your
<i>breathing (</i>pictured below). It can be done anywhere! Wherever you are then it is important to find a space where you won't be disturbed. Switch off the phone, turn on some music if that would help. To do this, sit in a comfortable position with your
arms on your lap & palms facing upwards. Then gently close your
eyes and breathe deeply and slowly. Try to continue for 5 –
10minutes and then slowly open your eyes and carry on with your
routine. It is best to try not to push away any thoughts but to
acknowledge them & then carry on focusing on your breathing. Good
luck & be calm & relaxed.</span></span></div>

It will affect about <span style="color: #333333; line-height: 16px;">four in five people at some point in their lifetime. Back pain can occur at any age & sometimes without any warning. It is commonest between the ages of 35 and 65. </span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;">B</span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;">ack pain is the second most frequently reported reason for visiting a doctor, and after the common cold, is the next leading reason for missed workdays for people under 45. It is also </span><span style="color: #111111; line-height: 20px;">a major cause of work related sickness absence in the UK and can affect every type of business.</span><span style="color: #111111; line-height: 20px;"> </span>Not only does it drain the economy but it also has real human cost. As those that suffer from it will tell you that severe nagging back pain is very difficult to ignore. It can be all consuming. I'm often asked if anything can be done about it & it is a difficult problem to cope with but the following may help:-</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><i>1. STAY MOBILE</i></b></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-weight: normal;"> </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>-</b></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-weight: normal;"> It is really crucible that you stay mobile even if you don't want to! This will help your muscles to strengthen & support your back. This can be done by v gentle walking (having someone to do with this may help or joining a local walking group) or swimming at your own gentle pace. Water will support your back whilst you strengthen the muscles around that area by gently kicking & circling your legs.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><i>2. BACK EXERCISES</i> - </b>are always recommended by the therapists & gentle exercises may be helpful to strengthen the muscles. Also, regular sessions of gentle back <a href="http://www.bibiwellbeing.co.uk/">massage</a> may help you:</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><i>3. 'MIND OVER BODY</i></b><i>' </i><b>-</b> try some gentle relaxation techniques such as those developed by <i><a href="http://www.mindful.org/">Mindfulness</a> </i></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This was recently recommended by the Speaker of the Houses of Parliament so it must be good for you!</span><br />
<i><br /></i>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><i>4. STRETCHING</i></b><span style="font-weight: normal;"> </span><b>- </b>I<span style="font-weight: normal;">f possible, do this before you get out of bed in the morning. This may help you to be not so stiff. Also, do gentle stretching exercises throughout the day whenever you feel yourself stiffening up. This is really important to do just before going to bed.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><i>5. CALM & POSITIVE - </i></b><span style="font-weight: normal;">this is easier said than done! I know this from experience. When you are in pain it seems to dominate your life & every move is an gigantic effort. However, if you can try to remain in calm state & have some positive thoughts such as: 'I'm going to get better', this will aid your recovery. Research has shown that positive (glass half full type!) recover much better from medical episodes.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">For those who have never had a
massage before I'm often asked what its like! Well, that's a difficult
question to answer as everyone responds differently to a session &
each experience will be an unique one depending on what they are having,
the experience of the therapist & what state the person treating is
in. I'm also often asked do I have to undress completely? Well, the
answer again is its up to you! Most clients undress down to their
underwear but you can have all your clothes on & have what's called a
'seated clothed massage' as can be seen from the picture below:- </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmm9FQPG1N-PTMmnXjiapsa2sqb66YmURy7ue5LiYkUNszpTlptQhuK-Q2gWAY4-_o8AlezjHUHyAQ0YAxhI97RkfdoY8vuuTqX2ZeqD9Z6HK8h9ySrVkxuRZYHeDgScqcHlQFtEss1xQ/s1600/_DSC1641.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmm9FQPG1N-PTMmnXjiapsa2sqb66YmURy7ue5LiYkUNszpTlptQhuK-Q2gWAY4-_o8AlezjHUHyAQ0YAxhI97RkfdoY8vuuTqX2ZeqD9Z6HK8h9ySrVkxuRZYHeDgScqcHlQFtEss1xQ/s1600/_DSC1641.jpg" height="207" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;">Clothed seated massage by <a href="http://www.bibiwellbeing.co.uk/">Bibi</a></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Also, you don’t have to lie down on a
massage couch if that's difficult for you to do. You can have a massage
in almost any position: lying on your side, standing against a wall, on
your stomach or on your back. Should a client choose to undress to their underwear then
they are covered with towels & these are carefully moved
as required to carry out the treatment. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">The other
question that I'm often asked is: 'what happens during a session? Well,that depends on what treatment you have come for and the therapist you
see! With my own practice there is always a full consultation so that </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">your
medical history and lifestyle can be taken into consideration in the
treatment plan. If you have come for a unclothed massage then you get
changed in privacy and lie on the couch. I then start the treatment
& will ask for feedback from you regarding the strokes &
pressure etc. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">At the end we chat about the treatment and your
aftercare is outlined. This is written down & given to you as a reminder. Also, I
will advise about what you can do in-between treatments to maintain or
improve your body’s equilibrium. This may be through gentle stretching
exercises which I'll show you or changes to your lifestyle or diet may be discussed.</span></span><br />
